چکیده

Background Research suggests that infants born to HIV positive women should be either exclusively breast or bottle fed. If breastfeeding is the method chosen it should be continued for at least six months in order to reduce the risk of viral transmission. Breastfeeding is especially important in the context of poverty and when clean water and fuel resources are inadequate for safe artificial feeding. It is evident that policies, recommendations, support and evidence-based information provision vary by country and locality.

Breast-feeding and HIV transmission.

HIV-1 (subsequently referred to as HIV) infection may be transmitted to the infant during breast-feeding. The risk of transmission varies with stage of maternal infection, duration of breast-feeding, type of breast-feeding (i.e. exclusive or mixed breast-feeding), and breast pathology. Recent studies support the findings of a meta-analysis (Dunn et al. 1992) and indicate that when breast-feedin...

Knowledge of pregnant women on transmission of HIV infection through breast feeding.

Although breast-feeding is nature's way of providing nutrition to the baby, in HIV positive mothers this has been identified as one of the means through which HIV infection is transmitted from the mother to the child. In Africa where children under the age of 5 are killed by preventable diseases like diarrhoea, the issue of HIV transmission through breast feeding poses an added huge problem. Re...

Potential impact of infant feeding recommendations on mortality and HIV-infection in children born to HIV-infected mothers in Africa: a simulation

BACKGROUND Although breast-feeding accounts for 15-20% of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, it is not prohibited in some developing countries because of the higher mortality associated with not breast-feeding. We assessed the potential impact, on HIV infection and infant mortality, of a recommendation for shorter durations of exclusive breast-feeding (EBF) and poor compliance to these...

Exclusive breastfeeding reduces risk of mortality in infants up to 6 mo of age born to HIV-positive Tanzanian women.

BACKGROUND Despite the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), exposure to HIV from breast milk has relegated EBF to an option only when formula feeding is not affordable, feasible, safe, and sustainable. Mixed feeding remains the norm in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVE We evaluated whether the duration of EBF was associated with mortality and HIV infection in children followed to ≤5 y of ag...

Infant feeding and HIV-1 transmission.

Anna Coutsoudis and colleagues present a potentially important piece of the puzzle concerning the transmission of HIV-1 through breast-feeding in the first few months of life. Breast-feeding poses a substantial risk of acquiring HIV-1 infection for the baby of an HIV-1-infected mother. Samples from 549 infants were tested by HIV-DNA PCR on day 1 and at ages 1 month and 3 months. Results reve...
